On August 29, 2024, the first online session of the Power Market Series, titled “Powering Up: The Role of Over-The-Counter (OTC) Trading in the Electricity Market, successfully concluded, with the participation of 151 industry professionals. Organized by South Asia Regional Energy Hub (SAREH), the communication and coordination hub under USAID’s South Asia Regional Energy Partnership program, this session provided an in-depth understanding of OTC trading dynamics in the electricity market.
The session commenced with welcome remarks from Monali Zeya Hazra, the Regional Energy and Clean Energy Specialist at USAID, and Pramod Thakur, Power Trade Expert at SAREP. Their opening addresses set the context for the series, focusing on the need for deeper insights into OTC trading platforms, particularly in the evolving power market of South Asia. .
Tata Power Trading Company led the first technical session, providing an overview of power market segments, trading avenues, and the key players in OTC trading, such as bilateral trade mechanisms, DEEP Portal, Power Exchanges, and the role of trading licensees. Emphasis was placed on the importance of data and information in shaping power market decisions, with Tata Power sharing its hands-on experiences in power trading and market engagement. .
The second technical session brought valuable perspectives from GNA Energy, a leading OTC platform service provider. They delved into the operational aspects of OTC platforms, the regulatory environment surrounding them, and how advanced data analytics shapes the future of energy trading. International case studies highlighted the potential benefits and challenges of integrating OTC platforms in the South Asian market. .
The session concluded with a dynamic Q&A, with participants expressing keen interest in the future role of OTC platforms in enhancing market liquidity, price discovery, and risk management. .
