The concept of super grids, which connect regional grids in a larger geographical area, is seen as an effective solution for meeting increasing energy demands, integrating renewable energy, and ensuring energy security.
As transnational and regional grids become more important, there is a growing need for cross-border transmission connections, coordinated system operations, and integrated electricity markets worldwide. This also requires the harmonization of policies, regulatory and legal frameworks, operational procedures, and the development of regional power markets to ensure the efficient operation of interconnected grids. Another crucial aspect of super/regional grid development is the establishment of regional institutions involving system planning and power system operation entities.
To bring together industry experts and to advance actions towards energy transition and security, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), under its South Asia Regional Energy Partnership (SAREP) program, in partnership with the India Smart Grid Forum (ISGF), organized a session titled ‘Super Grids for Energy Transition and Energy Security Solutions- Cross Border Electricity Trade in South Asia and Interconnection of Regional Grids in Asia’ on March 14, 2024, during India Smart Utility Week 2024, at the Hotel Lalit in New Delhi.
The session was moderated by Monali Zeya Hazra, Regional and Clean Energy Specialist, Indo-Pacific Office, USAID India. It saw the participation of South Asian stakeholders in the cross-border electricity trade who explored how super/regional grids facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources, aiding the transition to a low-carbon future. They also addressed technological innovations, economic benefits, regulatory frameworks, security measures, and challenges in the development and interconnection of super/regional grids within the GCC-South Asia-ASEAN region.
The session has set the stage for future collaboration towards building interconnected grids across Asia.
