The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), through its South Asia Regional Energy Partnership (SAREP) program, has been supporting India’s green hydrogen ecosystem through various initiatives including capacity building.
On July 7, 2023, USAID through SAREP, in partnership with ICICI Bank organized a ‘Capacity Building Workshop for Financing Institutions on Green Hydrogen’ in Mumbai, India. The workshop consisted of 8 sessions delivered by subject matter experts from SAREP, Industry, Non-profit think tanks and other stakeholders:
The workshop started with a welcome address by Apurva Chaturvedi, Senior Clean Energy Specialist, Indo-Pacific Office, USAID/India while Vishnu Kant, Business Head, Global Clients Group, ICICI Bank set the context.
Mayank Bhardwaj, Objective Lead, Mobilizing Investments, SAREP opened the sessions by providing an introduction to green hydrogen economy and explained the green hydrogen value chain. Pawan Mulukutla, Director of Integrated Transport, Electric Mobility & Hydrogen, WRI India provided the objectives, strategy and implementation roadmap of National Hydrogen Mission.
Vivek Bhardwaj, SAREP explained the main components of hydrogen facility and Shahi John, Sr. VP, Ohmium talked on trends in technology and Global Electrolyser manufacturing market. Post-lunch session by Vivek Salwan, SAREP discussed the costing and economics of Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia. Nandini Chaudhury, Principal and Deputy Head of South Asia Advisory · CrossBoundary, shared key insights, risks and mitigation options for financing which was followed by a session on global policy and regulations by Green H2 organization.
Kapil Maheshwari, CEO, Welspun New Energy shared his opinions on India’s potential as a green hydrogen hub before the closing remarks.
Nominations for the workshop were invited from banking and financing institutions. The workshop was attended by close to 100 participants representing 25 organizations.
Considering that the green hydrogen is a nascent sector and the beaming interest of Government of India in this sector, the capacity building workshop attempted on simplifying the green hydrogen sector for banks and financing institutions in India and is expected to enhance the flow of finance to the sector.
