On December 15, 2023, USAID’s South Asia Regional Energy Partnership (SAREP) program, organized a Regional Virtual Training Session on Real Time Market (RTM) participation preparedness. The training session addressed the evolving dynamics of Cross-Border Electricity Trade (CBET) in South Asia, particularly as the region witnesses an uptick in short-term CBET through power exchanges. Power exchange-based trade, which was traditionally limited to the Day Ahead Market (DAM), is shifting toward Real-Time Markets (RTM) due to changes made by Indian authorities in July 2023 to the rules governing the import and export of electricity across borders.
The workshop discussed the intricacies of transitioning from DAM to RTM and the strategic frameworks and operational considerations imperative for effective participation in RTM. t presented detailed bidding strategies, an understanding of RTM’s offerings, and advice from expert traders. This guidance was important for helping attendees grasp and adjust to the changing electricity trading market.
In the workshop, participants learned about real-time bidding through practical examples. This training helped them develop the ability to make smart decisions in real-time electricity trading. Getting this direct experience is very useful for those who need to keep up with new regulations and use the Real-Time Market to trade power effectively.
Experts at the workshop also highlighted the benefits of RTM over DAM, including the increased flexibility it offers to power sector stakeholders. RTM allows for a more precise balancing of supply and demand, as it operates closer to the actual time of electricity consumption, thus enabling participants to respond more effectively to unforeseen changes in supply or demand.
By focusing on RTM, the session aimed to foster a more dynamic, responsive, and economically efficient power market, which could have far-reaching implications for energy security, regional cooperation, and economic development.
The session has laid the groundwork for an enhanced regional understanding of RTM, setting the stage for a more interconnected and prosperous South Asian energy future.
