Synopsis: SAWIE in its attempt towards this goal has partnered with United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), ENERGIA International Network on Gender and Sustainable Energy (ENERGIA), and the Global Women’s Network for the Energy Transition (GWNET) to form the Gender and Energy Compact. This compact took the agenda to COP26 at Glasgow during Gender Day and highlighted the need to catalyze actions for gender equality and women empowerment in the battle against climate change.

Synopsis: Industrialization can significantly contribute to reduction in poverty and promote shared prosperity. However, women often face hindered access to secure and well- paid jobs in manufacturing industries and related service sectors, and consequently, their participation in the development of new technologies remains limited. The Energy and Industrial sectors remain two such manufacturing-heavy sectors that are gender imbalanced, and gender equity presents both a challenge and an opportunity waiting to be harnessed.

Synopsis: The energy sector remains one of the most gender imbalanced sectors and gender equity still holds a greater challenge in the India’s energy sector. The skewed women participation can partly be attributed to the social and perception barriers about dominance of field-based activities, geographical mobility and shift-based working, which have been traditionally considered as negative for women participation.

Synopsis: SAWIE, a joint initiative of U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF), aims to increase representation of women at the leadership levels in the energy, industrial and manufacturing sector thereby enabling diversity in decision making. As the name suggests SAWIE is focused in South Asia region, with India at its fulcrum.
