Bhutan

On August 8, 2024, the Bhutan Power System Operator (BPSO) unveiled its Vision Document, marking a pivotal moment for the country’s energy sector. The document addresses Bhutan’s urgent need for a comprehensive strategy to manage growing energy demand, harness untapped renewable resources, and enhance grid reliability and efficiency.

Developed in collaboration with USAID through the South Asia Regional Energy Partnership (SAREP) program, this document sets a new benchmark for excellence in Bhutan’s power system management.

The launch event commenced with Mr Sherub, CEO, BPSO, outlining the comprehensive year-long consultation undertaken to craft the BPSO vision document. Acknowledging SAREP’s pivotal role in shaping this vision, Mr Sherub expressed appreciation to USAID for its invaluable partnership in advancing Bhutan’s energy sector towards a sustainable and efficient future.

Mr Ajay Rawat, Objective Lead, Modernizing Utilities, SAREP presented the Vision’s core components, including its mission, values, and each of its seven ‘Strategic Objectives’. Mr VK Agarwal, Senior Advisor, SAREP, emphasized the often-overlooked importance of transparency in power system management.

Mr Karma P Dorji, Director of the Department of Energy and the event’s Chief Guest, underscored the urgency of expanding Bhutan’s energy capacity and called for focused capacity building within BPSO.

Ms Monali Zeya-Hazra, Senior Regional Energy Specialist at USAID/India, concluded the event with a vote of thanks. She recognized the contributions of BPSO’s leadership and the efforts of the SAREP team, while re-affirming USAID’s commitment to supporting Bhutan’s clean energy transition.

The launch of the BPSO Vision Document marks a significant milestone in Bhutan’s pursuit of energy security and sustainability. By highlighting the steps to effectively address challenges such as increasing energy demand, the need for grid stability, and the integration of renewable energy sources, the document provides a strategic roadmap and groundwork for a robust data governance framework to power the nation’s development while protecting its environment.
