Assisting Indian Railways in 2030 Net-zero Goal

Indian Railways (IR) is the world’s second-largest rail network, India’s single largest electricity consumer, and a major oil consumer. IR has articulated the ambition to become a net-zero carbon emitter by the year 2030. Decarbonizing IR will help India progress toward its carbon intensity reduction targets and will also improve the country’s energy security by reducing fossil fuel imports. SAREP is implementing the following activities to enable transition to net zero:
Green IR
  • Capacity development: SAREP is building the capacity of IR and REMCL for the procurement and deployment of RE and EE, by preparing a viable strategic plan, improving institutional and human capacity, providing access to finance, and supporting the procurement. This approach will help IR procure green power and optimize its power supply using EE and clean technologies.
  • Decentralized solar for powering Indian Railways: SAREP has analyzed the feasible potential for over 10 sites totaling more than 50 MW for feeding directly to the IR grid. SAREP also developed an excel tool to perform similar calculations for other sites. India has over 500 traction substations and railways that aim to unlock the potential to set up 1 GW of generating capacity. This will help railways in meeting its 2030 net-zero goal by the greater deployment of clean energy projects and mitigating carbon emissions.
  • Round the Clock Power Tender: SAREP designed and developed a mega RTC tender of 1050 MW jointly with the Railway Energy Management Company Limited (REMCL). Its implementation will to play an important role in IR’s net-zero vision of 2030 by supplying green and cost-effective power.
  • Energy Efficiency: Energy efficiency in existing buildings has been identified as a key strategy for decarbonization. SAREP is developing an energy efficiency retrofitting program, for which will enable significant savings of energy and reduce carbon footprint.
  • Technical Advisory: SAREP provides technical advisory on various energy-management-related issues to accelerate understanding of and decision-making on a variety of energy themes such as open access, procurement rules, transmission regulations etc.
