Study Tours

The 4th Technology Demonstration Study Visit for Indian Railways, facilitated by USAID/India through the SAREP program, took place from August 21 to 24, 2024, in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The event aimed to expose Indian Railways officers to advanced technology solutions in energy storage, smart metering, energy efficiency, renewable energy, and e-mobility, with the overarching goal of integrating clean energy and sustainable practices into the vast operational landscape of Indian Railways.

The study tour began with participants’ arrival in Bengaluru on August 21, 2024. The event’s main activities spanned across three days, from August 22 to 24, and included site visits to leading organizations known for their innovative practices in clean energy and sustainability.

Day 1: Battery Storage and Energy Efficiency

On August 22, the participants visited Log9 Materials HQ and R&D Center, exploring groundbreaking battery storage technology designed for India’s unique climatic and usage conditions. This visit highlighted the company’s focus on creating resilient and efficient energy solutions that could revolutionize various sectors. Later in the day, the group toured the Titan Integrity Campus. This three-floor structure embodies various innovative green building practices, such as cascading green terraces that provide natural insulation and reduce the cooling load.

Day 2: Renewable Energy and Sustainable Design

The second day featured visits to Infosys’ Bengaluru Campus and the Tata Power Solar PV Module manufacturing facility. At Infosys, the participants observed energy-efficient technologies such as radiant cooling systems, advanced building management systems, and sustainable architectural design. The visit demonstrated how these innovations could enhance energy efficiency in large-scale operations. The afternoon session at Tata Power Solar provided insights into one of India’s most extensive solar manufacturing facilities, emphasizing the role of renewable energy in achieving India’s green energy goals.

Day 3: E-Mobility and Feedback Session

The final day focused on e-mobility, with a visit to the Jio-bp Pulse EV charging hub. This facility exemplified the future of transportation with its fast, cashless, and convenient charging solutions for a variety of electric vehicles. The event concluded with a feedback session, during which participants reflected on the key learnings from the study tour.

The tour encapsulated the following exciting highlights:

  • Integrating advanced HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems with BMS (building management systems) for real-time energy monitoring and control
  • Cutting-edge solar PV and BESS manufacturing processes
  • 100% renewable energy-based EV charging hub with open-access green power
  • Facilities exceeding LEED, IGBC, ECBC, and BEE Shunya/Shunya+ standards
  • Potential partnerships for technology adoption and best practices
  • Participants gained invaluable insights into cutting-edge technologies and sustainable practices throughout the study visit. The knowledge exchange and collaborative spirit nurtured during this tour are expected to serve as a cornerstone for driving the adoption of innovative solutions, ultimately contributing to a more forward-looking railway infrastructure in India.
